Volcano Model By Eliana

The children in Ms. McElligott’s room were causing all kinds of hysteria this morning when exploring the scientific world of volcanoes and eruptions! Below are the materials used and a brief explanation of the science involved. Remember kids, Don’t try this at home!!

MATERIAL YOU NEED TO BUILD THE VOLCANO

  • A CARD 25 x25 cm
  • A SMALL BOTTLE OF WATER
  • TAPE
  • OLD NEWSPAPERS
  • BROWN PAINT
  • GLUE (YOU CAN MIX FLOUR AND HOT WATER)
  • PAINT BRUSH

HOW TO BUILD THE STRUCTURE:

  • FIX THE BOTTLE TO THE CARD, BY USING THE TAPE
  • MAKE BALLS BY USING THE OLD NEWSPAPER AND PLACE THEM AROUND THE BOTTLE AND FIX THEM WITH THE TAPE IN ORDER TO BUILD A MOUNTAIN (LEAVE THE TOP OF THE BOTTLE FREE)
  • COVER THE PAPER BALLS WITH GLUE AND PIECES OF THE OLD NEWSPAPERS (PAPER MACHE)
  • LET THE MOUNTAIN DRYAND PAINT IT WITH BROWN PAINT

 MATERIAL FOR THE ERUPTION

  • ½ GLASS OF WINEGAR
  • 1 TABLE SPOON
  • A LITTLE BIT OF DETERGENT FOR DISHES
  • RED PAINT OR TOMATO SOUCE

 ERUPTION

  • POUR IN UP TO HALF THE BOTTLE OF THE VINEGAR
  • PUT A LITTLE BIT OF DETERGENT WITH RED PAINT
  • COVER THE FLOOR WITH PAPER
  • ADD THE SPOON OF WINEGAR…AND….”BOOM!!!”

The Science: The Vinegar is an Acid and the Bread Soda is an alkaline and the two of these mix together to cause the eruption!
