MEET THE DRAGONS
In January of this year, the children in 4th – 6th Class got the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the Dragons who were all members of our school community. The products/services pitched were as follows: Greeting Cards, 8K Fun Run/Walk/Cycle, Book of Children’s Poems and a Mini Fun Day. The Dragons comprised Principal John Manley, Teacher Ms. O’Neill, Secretary Ann Marie Devane and Comenius Teacher Kristina. The children were heavily involved in the decision making process. The children all voted electronically on their iPads and laptops for the product/service they liked best. Coincidentally the Dragons and the children favoured the same idea and ultimately the Mini Fun Day idea emerged victorious. The children have worked very closely with the school community and local businesses to ready themselves for our big day.
OUR BIG IDEA
Our Mini Fun Day will include sweet/cake stalls, colouring competitions, Face Painting, Car Wash, Monster raffle, etc. Hot Drinks such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate will be sold during the day. We will have sports events for both adults and children. We will be charging for all of the above with the exception of the sports events. Our sports events will include races for children and adults, an obstacle course, three-legged races for couples, egg toss, etc. The children each invested €5 of their own ‘seed capital’. Their total contribution will be matched by the school. We are hoping our Monster Raffle will generate a healthy profit as we have secured at least twenty superb prizes/vouchers from local businesses. Sixth Class Pupil Brendan Lawrence called into most of these businesses in person to secure us the vouchers. Brendan was ably supported by all of his superb classmates. One such voucher could see a lucky boy or girl win a week at Camp Rockwell’s Summer Camp. We are heavily indebted to local businesses for their generosity.
VISIT OF A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR
On the 21st January 2014, business man Frank McGrath from CSS Ltd. visited the school. As an owner of five O2 shops, he was in the perfect position to talk to the children about business plans, profits and margins. Frank gave the children a very informative talk on what it takes to be an entrepreneur. He stressed the importance of having the courage to take a risk. Frank gave the children some invaluable tips on money management, Leadership & Initiative, Problem Solving and the importance of good communication skills. One of our pupils even persuaded Frank to donate a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone for our Monster Raffle! The children were very grateful for all the practical tips they received from Frank with regard to their business plan.
The children generated questionnaires for all parents which asked families how much they would expect to spend on different items/services, e.g. “We will have a selection of very nice sponsored prizes e.g. Samsung Galaxy smart phone (Sponsored), Tesco voucher, D’Arcy Hardaware voucher, etc. Would you buy a strip of raffle tickets for €1?”, “Would you get your child’s face painted at €2 per child? (Each child also gets a balloon)”, etc. The response from parents was both favourable and positive. We inputted all of the responses from parents into Google Forms and generated pie charts and bar charts which informed our decisions in terms of how much stock to buy. We have also used twitter, newspapers, local radio and our school website www.duallans.scoilnet.ie as a means of marketing the event. We hope the punters turn up in big numbers on the day.
OUR BIG DAY
The Mini Fun Day takes place in Dualla NS on Sunday, April 6th from midday to 3pm. We hope the weather is kind to us and that the children at least recoup their seed capital. They have worked diligently on this project since January 9th. It has been a wonderful journey for all concerned and we have all learned plenty.
